The best emails of Labor Day weekend 2016

Most people associate Labor Day with backyard barbecues, lake trips, and one last opportunity to enjoy the summer sunshine before it fades into fall.

But as marketers know, it's also one of the biggest retail sales days of the year. And if you’re anything like me, your inbox has been inundated these past couple weeks with promotion after promotion for Labor Day sales, each bigger and better than the last.

It’s always interesting to see what brands are doing to stand out during times of intense competition, so here are a few of my favorite Labor Day emails from this past weekend. Remember: This is only the beginning of a long, intense season for retailers, so check ‘em out and get inspired for even more chaotic marketing days to come (Cyber Monday, anyone?).

I love how Huckberry was able to beat their competition to the punch with some smart strategy and clever copy. The framing here is perfect: “Yeah – it’s a little early for a Labor Day sale, but we want you to get your order in time for the big weekend.” That way, they retain the element of timeliness but still get in on the action early.

Leon Max

An elegant black and white color scheme + a bold GIF + a play on a well-known Labor Day cliché = an email marketing dreamboat. We loved this chic send from Leon Max, and it definitely stood out in a sea of cluttered Labor Day mailings.

Urban Outfitters

This brand knows how to use simplicity to their advantage: In this Labor Day promo, they keep things straightforward by including only the essential information, and the dual CTAs provide clear courses of action for their subscribers. Recipients know within seconds whether or not they want to click through, and that’s an incredibly powerful thing in a world of rapidly shrinking attention spans.

I absolutely adored the bright, attention-grabbing GIF in the hero image of this email from Express. It’s a fantastic deal, so why not draw the eyes to it as quickly as possible? It was as flashy as it could be without becoming overwhelming. Well done, guys.

One great thing about ModCloth’s email marketing is their design aesthetic: When I’m scanning through emails in my inbox, I can immediately identify a ModCloth email without even looking at the subject line or sender name. This send is no different – that same signature design, a bold offer, and an eye-catching CTA make for a super effective send. Plus, subtle changes in the animation allow their team to send essentially the same message twice (once at the beginning of the weekend and again at the end) without losing the interest of their subscribers.

Local Flavor

Local Flavor killed it with this oh-so-festive send. It’s bright, the copy is abundantly clear, and "Save $5 Now” is a CTA we can definitely get behind – who wouldn't want to save five bucks if offered the chance? Plus, the clean top nav provides a few different paths for those wanting to explore their offerings more fully.

Dot & Bo

This mailing from Dot & Bo is all about amping up the urgency: The “Last Chance!” messaging, a clear expiration time for their offer, and even that GIF action at the top leave recipients itching to click through. (We’re also loving those Instagram images in the footer – what a smart way to integrate social media into your email marketing!)
