How Emma supports the ladies in Nashville’s tech scene
Back in May, we were excited to host our third Girl Geek Dinner right here at the Emma Bistro!
The Girl Geek Dinner is a global, monthly meetup aimed at inspiring and encouraging women in technology careers. The Nashville chapter was founded in 2013 by Rachel Werner and Kristin McKinney, specifically with the ladies in Nashville’s growing tech community in mind. It’s an incredible event and one that holds a special place in our hearts here at Emma.
Our own Christine McPherson (Director of Talent Acquisition) and Jean Soderkvist (Engineering Team Lead) led the “fireside chat” portion of the evening, discussing both their personal journeys at Emma along with the ways the company has evolved during their tenure. Though the Emma offices, product, and team structures have changed, the things that have remained constant are our commitment to culture, hiring kind people, and investment in our community.
Our friends at Startup Southerner summed it up beautifully in their recap of the event:
"Diversity and inclusion are paramount to Emma, even when the development demand seems to be outpacing the search process. In answer to many of the expected questions surrounding women in the workplace, McPherson said that she does not cower from going out of her way to find the best talent in the hiring process. “I have no problem saying ‘no, we need to interview more women’ in the hopes of finding another awesome lady to work with,” she explains. While the women concede that there is still work to be done, Emma stands out from most tech companies with a 60%-40% ratio of men-to-women."
It was a great evening of mixing and mingling, sharing the Emma story, and welcoming the Nashville tech community into our headquarters. Thanks for letting us be a part of it, Girl Geeks!
